Chapter Twenty-Eight

“You think the guy that shot at us killed your brother.” Still standing on the side of the highway as the traffic inched past, Sam ignored all of it—the looks, the sun, the heat—and focused in on the one important tidbit Shelby Walker had dropped.

Shelby blinked furiously as tears welled. She nodded once. “And maybe somebody else. All morning I’ve been calling a source I had here in Houston. She isn’t answering the phone.”

“Who?”

“A source.”

“If you think she’s in trouble, a name would be helpful,” Kellen said.

“I’ll give it to you, but we need to get out of here. Jake,” she cleared her throat, “my brother, knew more than he should have. He sent something to me thinking I would be home. Now my source, who was working with Jake, isn’t answering her phone. A senator involved in all of this has gone missing, and there’s a dead oilman back there who factors in somehow.”

Sam felt her blood start to boil. “And you think one guy did all of this?”

“I don’t know, but things are starting to line up. One connection is a coincidence. But two? That starts to get your attention. By three, I’m thinking there is something solid there. I can’t prove anything.”

Sam thought about the death she’d left at the morgue as she watched Shelby. So twitchy she looked like she’d jump out of her skin, the woman kept darting looks around. “And now you have something your brother had and a killer wants.”

“Or someone thinks she does,” Kellen added.

“Which is it?” Sam pressed.

“Someone thinks I do,” Shelby admitted with a sigh. “Jake liked to play games. He’s good at misdirection.”

“But not staying alive.” Sam put the pieces together. “And that’s how the roommate got assaulted?”

“To be honest, I’ve got pieces and no glue. I’m making this up as I go. The pieces fit, but I can’t prove any of it. I sure could use your help.”

“You shot at us. Is that any way to ask?” Kellen looked not the least bit amused.

“I’m a bad shot. Sue me. Or, better yet, do me a huge favor and throw me out of this hellhole of a state.”

“Why did you shoot at us?”

“The other guy was taking aim; I was sure of it. I’ve seen him around.”

“Where?” Sam pushed hard. She needed some answers.

Shelby once again glanced around. “Look, can we get out of here? That guy in the black Dodge could circle back.”

“There is that.” Sam looked at Kellen. “You know we are targets standing out here with a crowd gathering. Anyone with a rifle and steady hand could pick us off easy. I’ve been shot at once today, and, frankly, that’s more than enough.”

“She has a point,” Kellen said, turning to the New Yorker. “Shelby Walker. Why do I know that name?” He seemed intent on keeping Shelby unnerved, letting her stew in the juice of her own fears.

With one lane still not completely clear, the traffic was stacking up behind them. The traffic on the other side slowed as well.
